Laryngaphone

Expressive Voice-to-MIDI Controller

Project Overview

Laryngaphone is a new kind of musical interface that converts vocal expressions - especially scat-style singing - into real-time MIDI commands. The performer’s voice becomes a MIDI controller, capable of triggering and modulating synthesizers, samplers, and virtual instruments with sliding pitch, dynamics, and phrasing.

How It Works

Using a high-sensitivity condenser microphone, the system captures the nuances of vocal pitch and amplitude. A custom signal processing pipeline extracts note data, volume, and pitch bend, then outputs MIDI in real time to drive expressive instruments like virtual saxophones or strings.

Development Status

This is an independent research and development project. Prototypes are in progress, and the technical foundation includes real-time pitch tracking and audio-to-MIDI conversion. Future plans include integration with DAWs, live performance rigs, and accessibility tools.
